On the morning of April 26, 2024, the opening ceremony of the "2024 Looking China Youth Film Project ·Anhui" was successfully held at the lecture hall of Anhui Normal University Huajin Campus. This event was organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture at Beijing Normal University and Huilin Cultural Foundation, with academic support from the Film and Television Media Professional Committee of the Chinese Higher Education Society, and hosted by the School of Journalism and Communication at Anhui Normal University.

During the ceremony, Professor and Executive Dean Ma Mei of the School of Journalism and Communication at Anhui Normal University delivered the welcoming speech. Ma Mei considers this "Looking China·Anhui" as an exchange experience of hearts and minds, and wishes every friend to discover and be moved during their journey to Huangshan, to expand exchanges, and foster friendships. "A man who has committed a mistake and doesn’t correct it, is committing another mistake." The foreign mentor, Estonian film director Marta Pulk, who has participated multiple times in the "Looking China - Foreign Youth Film Project" as a foreign mentor, summarized her experience in the project with a famous quote from the Chinese Confucian founder, Confucius. She mentioned that no two cultures are the same, but each culture has its own internal logic and needs. Marta Pulk encourages every director and producer to open up their minds, understand things they have not experienced or understood before, and not be afraid of making mistakes. "We need to learn new things and have a deeper understanding of something." Following this, Diogo Manuel Martins da Palma, as the foreign youth representative, spoke at the opening ceremony, likening this "Looking China·Anhui" to a miraculous adventure through a maze and expressing his hope, "Let us embark on this journey of a lifetime together, wishing everyone good luck!" The province of Anhui is a unique cultural and geographical region. How can foreign youth effectively capture the story of Anhui, China through film? To provide insight for foreign young directors, Zhu Xiaokai, a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication of Anhui Normal University, delivered a lecture titled "Cultural exploration of the great beauty of Anhui" to the project team of "Looking China·Anhui". During the meeting, Zhu Xiaokai humorously and engagingly discussed various aspects of Anhui including its geography, beauty, history, and culture in English, showing the richness of this splendid province.

The foreign young directors and Chinese producers had a free debate on the chosen issue and completely shared ideas, with a nice environment on the spot, after fully comprehending the historical and humanistic qualities of Anhui.

Following the inauguration event, the inaugural plenary session of the 2024 "Looking China·Anhui" took place. Marta Pulk, the foreign instructor, led the meeting and presented her thoughts and requirements, while Yang Zhuofan, the coordinator of the Chinese Academy of Culture and International Communication's "Looking China" program, explained the plans and notes for the occasion.

Chinese and foreign youth listen attentively

Aiming to present a true, comprehensive, and three-dimensional view of China through the distinctive perspectives of foreign youth, the "Looking China Youth Film Project" is a cultural exchange program between Chinese and foreign youth. It also aims to create an international platform for cultural exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and foreign youth.

Ten young filmmakers from Canada, Estonia, and other countries will visit Shexian, Yixian, Qimen, and other counties in Huangshan Mountain this year. They will utilize photos to convey the exquisite cuisine, exquisite lines, and breathtaking landscape that can be found in Anhui.

Foreign youths will be drawn to the historical scenery of ancient Anhui villages like Xidi and Hongcun as well as intangible cultural heritages like Anhui opera, Anhui sculpture, and Huizhou handmade porcelain as part of the "Looking China·Anhui" project. The project team of "Looking China·Anhui" with a focus on "beautiful line - delicious - beautiful scenery," will tell the story of Anhui through the eyes of foreign youth, showcasing the province's distinct cultural perspective, superb artistic expression, and positive spirit of cooperation between Chinese and foreigners. Each team will finish a longer than ten-minute documentary film. Every team will completes a documentary of 10 minutes or more.

On the afternoon of the 26th, the project team of "Looking China·Anhui" departed to Huangshan for a 5-day shooting program.
